▶ What is phrase ?

A phrase is a group of certain words. They are used as an unit in a sentence and doesn't provide complete meaning.

▶ What are the types of phrases ?

Mainly there are eight types of phrases.

They are :

➡ Noun Phrases

It consists of noun and their modifiers.

For example :

▪ Monday became a cool, wet night.

▪ It was a unique thing as old as time.

➡ Verb phrases

A verb phrases include verbs and their modifiers.

For example :

▪ He was eager to go there.

▪ She was waiting for her friends to join there.

➡ Infinitive phrases

A noun phrase which starts with infinitive is called infinitive phrase.

For example :

▪ Everybody loves to go there.

▪ I tried to go there, but couldn't go.

➡ Gerund Phrases

A noun phrase which starts with a gerund is called gerund phrase.

For example :

▪ Taking my dog for a walk can be difficult

▪ Strolling along a beach at night can be romantic.

➡ Participal phrases

This phrase begins with a past or present participle.

For example :

▪ Seeing her parents after three years, made her cry.

▪ Painted a portrait, the viewers got impressed.

➡ Appositive phrases

It consists of more than one word. Also in appositive phrase the noun is restated.

For example :

▪ My friend, an online one, was quite mischievous.

▪ My idea, to visit my grandparents, was failed.

➡ Absolute phrases

It doesn't contain any acting verb and hence modifies the whole sentence.

For example :

▪ Purse in hand, she went to market.

▪ Their teacher was absent, the whole class shouted for joy.

➡ Prepositional Phrases

It begins with a noun and can acts as a noun, an adverb or adjective.

For example :

▪ The bag was in the class.

▪ She went there for a while.

phrases is a part of Sentences .it is a Group of words within a Sentence that does not contain Subject or a Verb. it does not express a Complete idea.

Example :-

He is standing Near a Wall.

in above sentences, the part 'near a wall ’ is a phrase because it does not contain a subject and a verb, and does not express a complete idea. hence, a phrase cannot stand as a sentence on its own .
