Piedmont lakes and piedmont glaciers, for example, are simply lakes and glaciers located at the foot, or base, of mountains. Malaspina Glacier in southeastern Alaska is the largest piedmont glacier in the world, spilling out of the St. Elias Mountains onto the coastal plain between Yakutat Bay and Icy Bay.

The word piedmont means something which is situated in the extreme bottom area of a mountain region.

Similarly, the plain lands which are situated in the extreme bottom area of a mountain region are known as the piedmont plains.

Example of a piedmont plain is the coastal plain at the bottom area of St. Elias mountain region.
