Some of the chemical stimulate plant growth while some others reatrd the rate of growth of plants. Therefore, these chemicals are known as plant growth regulators or plant hormones or phytohormones.

PLANT HORMONES OR PHYTOHORMONES -

They are chemical substances that are naturally produced in plants and are capable of regulating process of plants .

Different plant hormones help to coordinate growth , development and responses to the environment .

Major Classes of Plant Hormones .-

1) Auxin - They promote cell elongation and cell division .


They play an important role for the formation of root and seedless fruits .


2) Gibberellins - They help in the growth of the stem and flower


3) Cytokinins - They promote cell division and delay leaf ageing .


4) Abscisic Acid - It is a growth inhibitor . reverses the growth promoting effects of auxins and gibbrellins.

5) Ethylene - Promotes transverse growth

It promotes senescence and abssition of leaves
