PLASTIDS
• The term PLASTIDS was given by Haeckel in 1866.
• PLASTIDS are the largest cell organelles and are only found in plant cells.
• They are spherical or discoidal in shape and are enclosed in a double membrane.
• Inside a plastid , two definite regions are clearly visible - grana and stroma .
On the basis of the colour , PLASTIDS may be of the following types :
• CHLOROPLAST
Green coloured PLASTIDS containing chlorophyll for the purpose of synthesizing food for the plant.
• LEUCOPLAST
Colourless plastids, which store starch , protein and lipids.
• CHROMOPLAST
These plastids are yellow or reddish in colour and are present in flowers and fruits which in turn attract insects for pollination.
