Plastids are double-membrane organelle which are found in the cells of plants and algae. Plastids are responsible for manufacturing and storing of food. These often contain pigments that are used in photosynthesis and different types of pigments that can change the colour of the cell.

Plastids are double layered membrane bound organelle found only in plants.

There are 2 types of plastids :-

  1. CHROMOPLAST (coloured plastids)
  2. LEUCOPLASTS (white or colourless platstids)

  • Plastids containing the pigment chlorophyll II are known as chloroplast.
  • Chloroplasts are also contain various yellow or Orange pigments in addition to chlorophyll.
  • LEUCOPLASTS are primarily organelles in which material such as start ,oils and protein granules are stored.
