Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage and form a plug, or clot, to repair the damage.

Platelets also known as Thrombocytes are blood cells which release factors for the clotting blood.
These cell fragments are produced during megakaryocytes.
They are the special cells formed in red bone marrow of Mammalian blood.

These are oval shaped , disc like structures .
They are devoid of nucleus .
Platelets contain golgi bodies , mitochondria , fragments of actin and myosin , ADP etc.
There life span is of about 7-12 days.
The process of the formation of Platelets is known as Thrombocytosis.

They help in clotting or coagulation of blood . There reduction in number in humans may result excessive blood loss during injury.
