A polar compound is an unbalanced compound where the central atom (atom of the element which has least number of atoms in the compound, like H2O where oxygen is the central atom; or the atom of the element with highest electronegativity, like sulphur in H2SO4) pulls one of the other atoms towards itself. Mostly when the surrounding atoms of central atom are of the same element, the compound turns out to be non-polar; but when dissimilar atoms surround the central one the compound becomes a polar one. Generally, on the basis of the principle of 'like dissolves like' , polar compounds dissolve in water (water is a polar compound) whereas non polar compounds do not dissolve in water.

polar and non polar compounds... Bound that are partly ionic are called polar covalent bound. Non polar covalent bound, with eqial sharing if bound electron, arise when the electronegitives of two atom are equal
