The substances whose accumulation in air, water or soil causes harmful effects are called pollutants. The pollutants may be natural or man - made.

  • Natural pollutants are released by natural processes such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires, dust storms and flood.

  • Man - made or anthropogenic pollutants are generated by human activities, willingly or unwillingly, such as large scale industrialisation, deforestation, expanding urbanisation, agricultural pratices, transportation and increasing mining activities.
