Producers are organisms who make (or produce) their own food. Plants are producers. Plants are autotrophic, meaning that they self-feed through the process of photosynthesis. Without plants in the food chain creating energy from a non-living source (the sun) the rest of the food chain would not exist. Plants are the first energy source for primary consumers and start off the living food chain.
