Properties of cathode Ray's are :

  • Cathode rays travel in straight lines.
  • These rays are deflected by electric field. This is obvious because these rays are nothing but electrons.
  • These rays travel normally from the surface of cathode.
  • These rays are independent of the nature of the gas and electrodes placed in the discharge tube.
  • Cathode rays possess high kinetic energy due to high speed, therefore they can exert high mechanical pressure.

JJ Thompson performed about experiment in 1897 to study the properties of cathode rays by applying electric field.

  • Cathode rays are attracted by positive plate and repelled by the negative plate.
  • The consist of negatively charged particles
  • note: properties of cathode ray generated from cathode made from different metals were the same.
