Proto-oncogenes are simply normal genes in which when mutated, they become oncogenes.

Note that an oncogene is a gene which in certain circumstances can transform a cell into a tumour cell. In short an oncogene is one that has the potential to cause cancer.

hope that was helpful.

Answer :-

A normal gene which, when altered by mutation, becomes an oncogene that can contribute to cancer.

Proto-oncogenes may have many different functions in the cell.

Some proto-oncogenes provide signals that lead to cell division.

Other proto-oncogenes regulate programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Hope it Helps !!!!
