Protochordates:

Protochordates are not a real taxonomic group. They are an informal reference to ‘invertebrate animals’ that are closely related to ‘vertebrates’. They have two ‘invertebrate subphyla’ of the phylum Chordate: the Tunicate (salps, sea squirts, etc.) and Cephalochordata (amphioxus).

Protochordates have notochord, dorsal nerve cord, and gill slits. They differ from the ‘vertebrates’ in not having a ‘backbone’. Because of the similarities they share with invertebrates and vertebrates, protochordates are known as a connecting link between them.
