As the name suggests a protocol is a standardized set of rules which is meant to be adhered to under certain circumstances. Similarly, protocols in computer science are a set of procedures used for transmitting data between electronic devices. Different devices expect data in different packet sizes therefore a standard or preexisiting agreement - which decides how the data will be structured and how the sender will send the said data and how the reciever will recieve the said data - is required, that's where protocols come into play.

IP = Internet Protocol,  FTP = File Tranfer Protocol, HTTP = Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol, and TCP = Transmission Control Protocol.
