Princely states slowly vanished after the Battle of Plassy in 1757 in the Bengal region. Under Warren Hastings (British Governorships 1772-1785) the consolidation of British imperial rule over Bengal was solidified, with the conversion of a trade area into an occupied territory under a military-civil government. On 16 October 1905, by Viceroy Curzon the former province of Bengal was divided into two new provinces "Bengal" (comprising western Bengal as well as the province of Bihar and Orissa) and Eastern Bengal and Assam with Dacca as the capital of the latter. Partition was promoted for administrative reasons since Bengal was geographically as large as France and had a significantly larger population.

In 1947 the Muslim dominated Bengal was given to Pakistan. There were no princely states then.
