Orbitals within a shell are divided into subshells that have the same value of the angular quantum number. Chemists describe the shell and subshell in which an orbital belongs with a two-character code such as 2p or 4f. The first character indicates the shell (n = 2 or n = 4).

Quantum numbers describe values of conserved quantities in the Dynamics of a Quantum system. in the case of electrons, the quantum numbers can be defined as " the set of numerical values which give acceptable solutions to the schrodinger wave equation for the hydrogen atom." the first character will indicate n is equal to two or an equal to 4.
