ANSWER
__________
A number which can be written in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0 is called a rational number.
Example --
6/7
-7/8
5/-9
-17/-13
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember :-
1) 0 is also a rational number as it can be written as 0/1,0/2,0/3,....
2) The rational number 0 is called the identity element for the addition of a rational number.
3) For subtraction of rational numbers, the identity and inverse elements do not exist.
4) Reciprocal of 1 is 1 and that of -1 is -1.
5) Multipicative inverse of 0 does not exist.
6) For the division of two rational numbers, multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.
7) Division by 0 is not defined.
8) There are infinite rational numbers that exist between two given numbers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was once an ancient Greek Mathematician named Pythagoras who believed that all numbers were rational or could be written as a fraction. Later on, one of his students, Hippasus proved him wrong by saying that the square root of 2 cannot be represented as a fraction, and hence, there are many other numbers which cannot be represented as fractions. Thus, not all numbers are rational numbers. Pythagoras had a hard time accepting this. These numbers were considered irrational numbers.

It can be written in the form of , here p and q are integers. In rational number q ≠ 0 - (Denominator must not be equal to 0). Even a negative number can be written in thr form of p/q considering the value of denominator is 1.
