◆ Ozone layer -

  • Ozone is allotrope of oxygen with molecular formula O3 i.e. trioxygen.
  • Layer of ozone gas is present in stratosphere.
  • Ozone protects the earth from harmful UV radiations.

# Reasons for depletion in ozone layers -

  1. Recently ozone layer is rapidly depleting because of use of chlorofluorocarbons as refrigerants.
  2. Use of pesticides, nitrous oxide results in depletion of ozone layer.
  3. Greenhouse gases released by smoke from automobiles depletes ozone.
  4. Layer of ozone is adversely affected by cutting of trees.
  5. Due to increased air pollution in recent years, ozone layer is thinned.
