An organ or cell able to respond to light, heat, or other external stimulus and transmit a signal to a sensory nerve is called receptors. There are two types of acetylcholine receptors (AChR) that bind acetylcholine and transmit its signal: muscarinic AChRs and nicotinic AChRs, which are named after the agonists muscarine and nicotine

Receptors are special type of epithelial cells that are sensitive to a particular stimulus. They send sensory impulses to the CNS.

There are several types of receptors, here are few of them:

1) Mechanoreceptors
2) Chemoreceptors
3) Thermoreceptors

Hope it helps ^_^
