Recombinant DNA vaccines are third generation vaccines and are made of a small, circular piece of DNA -plasmid that has been genetically engineered to produce one or more specific proteins from a pathogen. The vaccine DNA is injected into the cells of the body where the “inner machinery” of the host cell reads the DNA and uses it to synthesize the pathogen proteins. Because the proteins are recognized as foreign, when the host processes these cells and displayed on the surface, the immune system is altered , which then triggers a range of immune responses.
Examples: Bird flu vaccine for humans and vaccine to protect horses from West Nile Virus are DNA vaccines.
