Redox Reaction

The chemical reaction in which oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously is called as Redox Reaction.

Examples

1) When hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) react with each other, water and sulphur are formed.

Chemical Equation

2H2S + SO2 ➡️ 2H2O + 3S

In this chemical reaction, reduction of sulphur dioxide takes place to form sulphur while oxidation of hydrogen sulphide takes place to form water.

Hence, it is a redox reaction.

2) When copper oxide (CuO) and hydrogen gas (H2) react with each other, copper and water are formed.

Chemical Equation

CuO + H2 ➡️ Cu + H2O

In this chemical reaction, reduction of copper oxide takes place to form copper while oxidation of hydrogen gas takes place to form water.

Hence, it is a redox reaction.
