They are useful for exploring the underwater magma deposits because when the breakup of Pangaea happened then that allowed for the earths crust to break as well resulting with the outer core to spill into the water. This cannot be seen underwater without these devices because then we would not know if the continents had broken up or not. This is why we have research submersibles like Alvin to see what is underwater.
