what are ribosomes
Answers
Ribosomes are cell organelles that consist of RNA and proteins. They are responsible for assembling the proteins of the cell. Depending on the protein production level of a particular cell, ribosomes may number in the millions.
What is ribosomes ?
They were first observed by Romanian cell biologist George Palade. The term was proposed by Richard B. Roberts in 1958. It is a small, dense, functional structure found in all cells. It is about 20nm in diameter. It is composed of 65% rRNA and 35% ribosomal proteins. The ribosomes consists of two subunits that fit and work during protein synthesis.
❋ Ribosomes are found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. There are two pieces or subunets in every ribosome. It has been identified that the 60-S (large) and 40-S small subunets are present.
❋ While in eukaryotes 50-S (larger) and 30-S (small) subunits are present in prokaryotes (figure).
Generally, the free ribosomes are suspended in cytoplasm. The proteins made by free ribosomes are used within the cell.
✯The main function of ribosomes is that it plays an important part in protein synthesis.
