Nitrogen present in air cannot be used by plants. There are some bacteria present in soil that can convert gaseous or atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be easily used by the plant. Such bacteria are called nitrogen fixing bacteria .An example of such nitrogen fixing bacteria is Rhizobium . Leguminous plants such as beans, peas, gram etc have rhizobium bacteria in its root nodules ,which increases the fertility of soil and fix nitrogen.

Hope it helps you.
