Dietary fiber or roughage is the indigestible portion of food derived from plants. It has two main components: Soluble fiber, which dissolves in water, is readily fermented in the colon into gases and physiologically active byproducts, and can be prebiotic and viscous. Sources of roughage are whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, apples, lettuce, potatoes, broccoli, beans, etc. Simple definition of roughage:- It's a type of fibre that our body fails to digest, it helps in free bowel movement.
Hope this helps :-)
