Roughage is the fibers matter in our food which cannot be digested. It is mainly made up of indigestible carbohydrates called cellmoses. Like water Roughage does not provide any nutrient to our body but its present is essential for normal working of digestive system.

  • Being fibrous, cellulose absorbs a lot of water and retains it, thus helps in keeping the faecal material soft and prevents constipation.
  • The movement of undigested food through the intestine becomes easier.
  • It simulates the muscles contraction in the intestinal wall, making the movement of faecal matter easy.
