To know what are s,p,d,f in chemistry, you have to know what is an orbit and what is an orbital

Orbit

the region around the nucleus in which electron revolves is called orbit

Orbital

The region in the orbit where the probability of finding electron is maximum is called orbital

⇒orbitals are of four types ,they are

● s - orbital

● p - orbital

●d - orbital

● f - orbital

So,s,p,d,f are types of orbitals in chemistry.

To know how 2s²2p¹... come for boron, you should know what is electronic configuration

Electronic configuration

⇒The arrangement of orbitals in increasing order of their energies is called electronic configuration

Important points

s - orbital can accommodate 2 electrons

●p-orbital can accommodate 6 electrons

●d-orbital can accommodate 10 electrons

●f -orbital can accommodate 14 electrons

Energy order of orbitals

1s<2s<2p<3s<3p<4s<3d<4p...

Ex: Electronic configuration of lithium:-

1s²2s¹(as s-orbital can fit only 2 electrons,electron from 1s orbital jumps to 2s orbital)
