Explanation:

¶ In chemistry, a salt is a chemical compound consisting of an ionic assembly of cations and anions. Salts are composed of related numbers of cations and anions so that the product is electrically neutral.

¶ Salt, in chemistry, substance produced by the reaction of an acid with a base. A salt consists of the positive ion (cation) of a base and the negative ion (anion) of an acid. The reaction between an acid and a base is called a neutralization reaction.

¶ Salt is the product formed from the neutralisation reaction of acids and bases. In the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide the salt formed is sodium chloride.

     USES OF SALTS :

∆ Salt has long been used for flavoring and for preserving food. It has also been used in tanning, dyeing and bleaching, and the production of pottery, soap, and chlorine. Today, it is widely used in the chemical industry.

∆ It is employed for curing and preserving hides and as a brine for refrigeration. In the chemical industry, salt is required in the manufacture of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), hydrochloric acid, chlorine, and many other chemicals.

∆ Common salts used in day to day life: ⇒Sodium Chloride (NaCl) - commonly known as table salt, sodium chloride, is used in seasoning food. It is also used in the making of soap and in the preservation of food. ⇒Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) - this is used in baking powder, fire extinguishers and in medicine as antacid.
