A baby's sex is determined at the time of conception. When the baby is conceived, a chromosome from the sperm cell, either X or Y, fuses with the X chromosome in the egg cell, determining whether the baby will be female (XX) or male (XY). To be female, one needs to be (XX), whereas to be a male, (XY) is needed.

Sex chromosomes:--- These are the chromosomes which tells us whether the progeny of an individual is a boy or a girl.

^^How is the sex of the child determined in human beings?^^

>>All human chromosomes are not paired. Most of the chromosomes have maternal and a paternal copy and we have 22 such pairs. But one pair called sex chromosome is odd in not being a perfect pair.

>>Women have a perfect pair of sex chromosomes both called 'X'. But men have a mismatched pair in which one is a normal sized X while the other one called Y. So, Men has XY sex chromosomes while women has XX sex chromosomes.

>>All children will inherit an X chromosome from their mother regardless of whether they are boys or girls. So, the sex of the child is basically determined from what they inherit from their father. A children who inherits an X chromosome from their father will be a girl and one who inherits Y chromosome from his father will be a boy.

This is how, sex is determined in human beings.

Hope it helps
