A fairly new tool for gardeners, a heat zone map divides a geographic area into regions based on the severity of summer heat. Just as a plant is capable of tolerating a certain level of cold weather, many plants have an upper range of tolerance as well. Heat zones will probably become more commonly used in plant descriptions to help gardeners select plants suited to both their summer and winter climate.
