Silicones :
A silicone or polysiloxane is any of a number of polymers that include any synthetic compound made up of repeating units of siloxane.
General formula :
Silicones have in general thechemical formula [R2SiO]n, where R is an organic group such as an alkyl (methyl, ethyl) or phenyl group.
how are they prepared :
Silicones are prepared by the hydrolysis of alkyl or aryl substituted silicon halides.
Alkyl or aryl substituted silicon halides are prepared by passing gaseous alkyl or aryl halide over an alloy of copper and silicon at 300°C.
Uses of silicon :
- In cookware
- In dry cleaning (liquid silicon is used as a dry cleaning solvent)
- In defoaming (silicon is used as an active component in defoamers.
- In electronics (electronic components are sometimes encased in silicon)
