I believe both concepts are somewhat related.

If we accept the following definitions

Research is the collecting of information, investigation, experimentation in order to obtain new knowledge or discover something.

A project is a temporal endeavor to obtain a defined goal.

Then a formal research may be considered a project and managed as a project. If the research is too complex it may be decomposed in several goals and create several projects in order to achieve the goals of the research.

These means, the “project” discipline offers a framework of tools, knowledge, and skills to plan, execute, monitor & control de efforts in order to obtain the most benefits from the research efforts.

Is it possible to do Research with not project organization? Maybe for the most simple research objectives, but you’ll waste resources and time and you’ll have less chance of success.
