Simple tissues:

Simple tissues are composed of cells which are structurally and functionally similar. These tissues are all made of one type of cells.

Types of simple tissues are:
1. Parenchyma
2. Collenchyma
3. Sclerenchyma

PARENCHYMA:
This tissue forms the bulk of the plant body. Parenchyma cells are living and possesses the power of the division.
The cells are rounded or isodiametric (equally expanded on all sides). The shapes of the parenchyma cells are oval , round, polygonal or elongated in shape.
Parenchyma Cells have living Protoplasm. Parenchyma has loosely packed cells

The parenchyma is distributed in plant body such as stem, roots, leaves flowers and fruits. The parenchyma tissue is found in the soft parts of the plant such as cortex of roots ,ground tissue in stems and Mesophyll of leaves.

Parenchyma serves as a packing tissues to fill the spaces between other tissues and maintain the shape and firmness of the plant due to its turgid cells.

The main function of parenchyma is to store and assimilate food. They serves as a food storage tissue.

Parenchymatous tissues stores waste products of plants such as tannins, gums, crystals, resins of inorganic waste.

If chloroplast is present the parenchyma tissue is called CHLORENCHYMA and it performs photosynthesis.e.g The Mesophyll of leaves.

In aquatic plants like hydrilla large air cavities are present in parenchyma to give buoyancy to the plants. Such a type of parenchyma is called AERENCHYMA.

COLLENCHYMA:
This tissue also consist of living cells. It is characterized by the deposition of extra cellulose at the corners of the cells. In collenchyma intercellular spaces are generally absent.Collenchyma cells are elongated in shape. They often contain a few chloroplast.

The cells of the collenchyma, located below the epidermis of dicotyledonous stem and leaf stalk. They are absent in monocot stems, roots and leaves.

Collenchyma is a mechanical tissue, it provides mechanical support and elasticity. They also provides tensile strength with flexibility.

SCLERENCHYMA:

They are dead cells and they are devoid of protoplasm. The walls of cells of sclerenchyma are thickened with deposition of Lignin. The cells of sclerenchyma are closely packed with out intercellular spaces.

Cells of sclerenchyma are of two types: fibres and sclereids.

Fibres consist of very long narrow thick and lignified cells. They are pointed at both ends and the cluster into strands.

Sclereids are also called grit cells or stone cells. They are irregular shaped.

They are found in stems around the vascular bundle, roots ,veins of leaves, hard covering of seeds and nuts.

The SCLERENCHYMA is mainly mechanical and protective in function. It gives strength, rigidity comma flexibility and elasticity to the plant body.
