Solar eclipse:

An eclipse in which the sun is obscured by the moon is called solar eclipse. It occurs when the moon gets between earth and the sun, and the moon castes a shadow over the earth. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of a new moon, when moon passes directly between the sun and the earth and it's shadows falls upon the earth's surface.

Lunar eclipse:

An eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes through the earth's shadows. The moon directly passes behind the earth and into its shadows. This can occur only when the sun, earth and moon are exactly or very closely aligned, with earth between the other two. A lunar eclipse can occur only on the night of a full moon.
