The production of plants by the method of tissue culture is also known as micro propagation ( due to extremely small amount of plant material used.
The production of new plants from a small piece of plant tissue or cells removed from the growing tips of a plant in a suitable growth medium called culture solution is called tissue culture
Each plant will be genetically identical to the original plant from which they are grown. So they are called as soma clones.
Advantages of tissue culture:
Tissue culture is very fast technique .
New plants produced are disease free.
Very little space is required for growth of new plants.
New plants can be grown around the year irrespective of seasons.
Food plants that are grown by this micro propagation are sugarcane and banana.
