He came down to Washington along with his daughter in search of a publisher for his book. He was a old-fashioned Southern gentleman while his daughter was more practical and even took care of their finances.
Hargraves and his relationship with Major Talbot
Henry Hopkins Hargraves was another boarder in the boarding house where Major Talbot stayed with his daughter. He was a well-mannered dialect comedian young man. He used to perform at a vaudeville theater. appears to take an interest in the major and his stories.
Major Talbot initially did not like Hargraves' profession as a result was a bit hesitant. Gradually he is impressed by Hargraves agreeable manner and his keen interest in his stories. Soon Major Talbot made it a ritual to read his manuscript to him every afternoon and chat over the old days. They eventually turned out to be good friends.
