When people move from rural to urban places, they may face these struggles:

  1. Finding accommodation- One needs a place to live in. People begin with renting and then some years later they may choose to own residential space.
  2. Finding employment- People move to urban areas primarily in search of work. So, their biggest challenge is to find employment as soon as possible, because they need money to settle in a new place and also to manage daily expenses.
  3. Higher expenses- There is usually a big difference in expenses in urban and rural areas. Urban areas have a high population density and so rents are high. That itself makes everything more expensive- grocery, vegetables, clothing, etc.
  4. Language issues- Though the urban areas are metropolitan in nature, people coming from rural areas can face language issues. For example, the Hindi spoken in villages is different from that spoken in cities. Though communication is possible, there can be hiccups because of the difference in dialect.
  5. Clothing/dressing issues- People from rural areas might find themselves a little out of place in urban areas because of the clash between completely traditional and modern-traditional clothing. For example, many women in rural Haryana still cover their heads and faces in front of males, but this is not the case in Chandigarh, which is the capital city of Haryana.
  6. Disorientation- Newcomers always find it a little difficult to find their way across a city. It takes time to know the roads and get a sense of direction. Until that happens, they will feel very lost and disoriented.
  7. Interpersonal relations- Rural India is known for its warmth and community living. People know everyone in their village. This is not so in urban India. City life is very busy and extremely impersonal. No one has the time to talk to a newcomer and help out genuinely.

Many of the challenges faced by rural newcomers in urban cities are because of the population density of the cities. The other challenges are due to cultural issues.
