Spermatogenesis is the process of the production of sperms from the immature germ cells in males. It takes place in seminiferous tubules present inside the testes. During spermatogenesis, a diploid spermatogonium (male germ cell) increases its size to form a diploid primary spermatocyte. This diploid primary spermatocyte undergoes first meiotic division (meiosis I), which is a reductional division to form two equal haploid secondary spermatocytes. Each secondary spermatocyte then undergoes second meiotic division (meiosis II) to form two equal haploid spermatids. Hence, a diploid spermatogonium produces four haploid spermatids. These spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperm) by the process called spermiogenesis.

Spermatogenesis is the mechanism by which haploid spermatozoa form in the seminiferous tubules of the testis from the germ cells.

Explanation:

In the process of spermatogenesis, mature male gametes or sperms are produced by male which further fertilize the female gamete or oocyte that forms zygote and the successful fertilization causes pregnancy of female.

The process of spermatogenesis can be explained in several stages:

  1. The process begins with the mitotic division of the spermatogonial stem cells present in the basement of tubules and produces two types of cells Type A (regenerate stem cells) and Type B (primary spermatocytes).
  2. The primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis I and divided into two secondary spermatocytes which further undergoes meiosis II and divides into two equal haploid spermatids.
  3. The spermatids follows the process of spermiogenesis and transforms into spermatozoa or sperm, which further matures and form sperm cells.
  4. The primary spermatocyte produces two cells where the secondary spermatocytes subdivised into four haploid cells and four spermatozoa.
