STATIC FRICTION

If a body remains at rest inspite of application of a force, static friction is developed

STATIC FRICTION=APPLIED FORCE

Static friction is a self adjusting force.

LIMITING FRICTION

It is the maximum value of static friction. It is the minimum applied force required to cause a motion.

It may be regarded as the force of intermolecular locking between two surfaces in contact.Limiting friction is the maximum friction developed between two surfaces and it is constant for a pair of surfaces.

Limiting friction=coefficient of static friction×Normal reaction.

KINETIC FRICTION

When the applied force is greater than the limiting friction ,the body will be in motion and the friction then developed is called kinetic friction.

Kinetic friction is independent of applied force and it is constant for a given pair of surfaces.

Kinetic friction=coefficient of kinetic friction ×Normal reaction.
