Statoliths are crystalline particles made up of calcium carbonate that are embedded in a gelatinous cavity. The gelatinous cavity is lined with cells that are sensory in nature. These cells are called statocysts that are fromed during development from the invagination of surface of body. Statoliths are used in mechanoreception to detect gravity because under the action of gravity these crystals move in downward direction. They are present in jelly fish, crustaceans and sea cucumbers.
