A Statue Mile (what we usually refer to as a mile) was invented by the Romans as a unit of measure and was considered to be 1,000 paces. It comes from the latin Mille which means one thousand
The Nautical mile however, is far more logical. It is the length of one minute (one 60th of a degree) of an arc of the earth’s surface along a line of longitude (which means a line going North/South around the globe) or around the equator (which is the same distance). Over history the exact length of a nautical mile has been in dispute because the earth is not entirely round and so the distance is slightly longer at the poles where the earth is flatter.

A nautical mile is based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude. It is slightly more than a statute (land measured) mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles ). Nautical miles are used for charting and navigating.

I hope this will help you
