Steam distillation is a special type of distillation for temperature sensitive materials like natural aromatic compounds. It once was a popular laboratory method for purification of organic compounds, but has become less common due to the proliferation of vacuum distillation.

Steam Distillation:

Steam distillation is generally used for a mixture of tars and oils which is not dissolved in water or partially soluble in water. It is same as simple or differential distillation but, instead of a direct supply of heat, they used hot water or steam without stopping the process.

In steam distillation compound is boils at a lower temperature. If the compound is slightly soluble in water, it may decompose at boiling point. Therefore steam distillation has advantage than vacuum distillation.

Basic Diagram Of Steam Distillation:

Types Of Steam Distillation:

1. External Steam Distillation: in this type steam is supply to the flask is externally with the help of steam engine.

2. Internal Steam Distillation: in this type steam is supply to the flask by hot water source.
