In DNA, the ends have complementary bases which are necessary for the restriction of enzymes and cut them to 2 complementary DNA strands which generates "sticky ends". They are also known as "overhang". It is a long chain of unpaired nucleotides and these strands are not of equal length. The cut may result in either a sticky end or a blunt end depending on the restriction enzyme. In molecular cloning, sticky ends are more useful because they assure that the human DNA strand is placed in the right direction into the plasmid.
