When restriction endonucleases cuts a double stranded DNA ,they may result in formation of either sticky ends or nonsticky (blunt) ends.
Sticky ends are DNA sequence that are protruded and their complementary ends can combine readily to form a complete DNA.
Eg:
5'-GAAGA-3'___ 5'-G + 5'-AAGA-3'
3'-CTTCT-5'. 3'-CTTC-5' T-5'
Blunt ends don't have any adjacent protrusion of DNA sequence.
Eg:
5'-CCGG-3'_____5'-CC-3' + 5'-GG-3'
3'-GGCC-5'. 3'-GG-5' 3'-CC-5'
