surds are those numbers whose square root can't be taken out in any natural no for example: √3=1 .732 so it is not surd whereas √4=2 so it is surd

Index of a radical or surds is always a natural number.
For example,
Here a^m is called radicand , n√a^m is called surds or radical and n is called the index of the radical or surds. The sign √ is called the radical sign.
