The tap roots system is a tap root system, where, the mass of roots which develop from the radicle of the seedling embryo. It consists of a tap root, secondary roots, tertiary roots and some of the rootless. The radicle itself grows up directly into the main or primary root forming the persistent primary root which is even known as the . It is usually seen as th most prominent, thickest and largest of all roots. Tap roots then gradually become narrow towards the tip of it. Secondary and tertiary roots are respectively the branches of first order and second order in it. They are usually formed during the acropetal succession (youngest towards the growing point and oldest towards the base of the parent root or main root). In orientation wise the tap root is vertical, secondary roots are horizontal or oblique while the tertiary roots are running in different directions. Rootlets are the ultimate root branches of the tap roots and the whole tap root system, they bear some of important root hairs for absorption of water and nutrients.
Tap roots are of generally two types- deep feeder and surface feeder. Deep feeder tap root system has a completely elongated tap root which is penetrating in the deepest layers of the soils. It is mostly met in the older and younger maturing trees. Deep feeder tap root systems have also been called as racemose tap root system. In surface feeder it is quite of the opposite to deep feeder tap root system, they have tap roots which does not elongate very much. The secondary roots spread to a greater extent, mostly horizontally near the soil surface. Such a system is also being named as cymose tap root system. The cymose tap root system or surface feeder tap root system of some annually occurring plants consists of thin fibrous roots, this may also be called fibrous tap root system.
