Earth is made up of 7 major and minor plates in the outer surface (crust) are of the earth.
These plates are known as tectonic plates
Tectonic plates are division of the lithosphere (i.e) Earth's crust and upper mantle, based on the natural calamities like volcanoes, earth quakes, etc. that take place in the plate boundaries. These layers of earth keep moving very slowly with respect to each other.
Classification:
Primary plates - Also known as Major tectonic plates; Few examples are Indian plate, African plate, Pacific plate.
Secondary plates - Also known as Minor tectonic plates; Few examples are Arabian plate, Burma plate, Cocos plate.
Tertiary plates - Also known as Micro tectonic plates; Few examples are Victoria plate, Sunda plate, Easter microplate.
