➠ AnSwer :-
The term “terrestrial” stems from the Latin terra which means “earth.” With the exception of epiphytic (plants living on other plants) and free-floating aquatic plants (such as Azolla or water fern, or Lemna or duckweed), virtually all plants are rooted in earth, or soil.
➝ The breakdown is like this:
- Plants that grow at some distance from standing water or fully saturated soils are upland plants, and clearly terrestrial.
- Plants that always, or usually grow near but not in water are riparian and considered terrestrial, but associated with wetlands, seasonal or permanent. Plants that require soil saturated with water somewhere in the root zone are sometimes referred to as phreatophytes (free-at-oh-fights).
- Plants that are rooted in soil that is always or seasonally below the water line of a stream or lake are emergent aquatic, or in some cases, submerged aquatic. There are also a few submerged marine (in oceans or bays) vascular (flowering) plants, and many large, submerged and emergent marine algae. For plants with proper roots, they are still rooted in soil, but all or much of the plant’s body is below the surface of water for all or part of the year. Algae do not have roots per se, but most submerged species have a structure at the base, called a holdfast, by which they attach themselves to rocks in the aquatic environment.
- Plants that live entirely on the surface of a water body are free-floating aquatic. Some of these plants may persist on saturated mud for some time, but if the soil surface dries, they die.
- Lastly, there are microorganisms in marine and aquatic systems that live at or near the surface. These are planktonic, and consist of small algae and photosynthetic bacteria.
- In short, any plant that has its roots in soil not covered at least part of the time by water (first two bullets above) is considered terrestrial
