the two major types of seed plant are the Gymnosperm and angiosperm .
Gymnosperm
This term is derived from to Greek word : gymno-means naked and sperma - means seed . the plant of this group bear naked seed and are usually perennial ,evergreen and woody .
Example :- pines and deodar .
Angiosperms
This word is made from to Greek words : Angio means covered and sperma- means seed . these are also called flowering plants . the seed develop inside and ovary which is modified to become a fruit . plant embroy in seeds have structure called cotyledons . cotyledons are called seed leaves because in many instances they emerge and become green when the seed germinate .
- the angiosperms are divided into two groups on the basis of the number of cotyledons .
- plant with seed having a single cotyledon are called monocotyledons or monocots .
- plant with seed having two cotyledons are called Dicots.
