The three types of plastids are :

  1. Chloroplasts
  2. Chromoplasts
  3. Leucoplasts

Let us learn more about each of the types of plastids below:

1. Chloroplasts:

  • Chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments are present in the chloroplast.
  • They can trap the energy from sunlight, which facilitates the process of photosynthesis in green plants.
  • Also, the green colour of leaves is imparted by chlorophyll.

2. Chromoplasts:

  • Fat soluble pigments are present in chromoplasts like carotene, xanthophyll, and some others.
  • The colours like red, orange, yellow are imparted by these pigments.

3. Leucoplasts:

  • Unlike chloroplast and chromoplast, leucoplast is colourless. It can be found in various shapes and sizes and helps in the storage of nutrients.
  • Again, leucoplast is of three types-
  1. Amyloplast - Stores carbohydrates, as in potato
  2. Elaioplast - Stores fats and oils, as in citrus fruits
  3. Aleuroplast - Stores proteins, as in seeds of some plants, maize
