Constructive plate boundaries (or divergent) are zones where new lithosphere is created. Such examples are mid ocean ridges, and are areas of extension. Normal faults are quite common here as normal faults cause extension.


Destructive plate boundaries (or convergent) are the opposite of constructive in that one plate subducts below a lighter plate; and is destroyed (although recycled would be a better term). These plate boundaries form volcanonic arches and island chains like Japan.


Tranform boundaries are shear zones with strike slip faults. These faults have near vertical dip. The famous example is probably the San Andreas fault.
